RELATIVE CLAUSES:
A. Defining relative clause:
Usage: - Who / whom for people 
 in defining relative clauses
 - Which for thing (s) 
Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định (Defining relative clauses): là mệnh đề được dùng để xác 
định danh từ đứng trước nó. Mệnh đề xác định là mệnh đề cần thiết cho ý nghĩa của câu, 
không có nó câu sẽ không đủ nghĩa. Nó được sử dụng khi danh từ là danh từ không xác 
định và không dùng dấu phẩy ngăn cách nó với mệnh đề chính.
1. The man is very kind. He helped me yesterday.
 The man who helped me yesterday is very kind.
2. She is a nurse. I met her yesterday. 
 She is a nurse whom I met yesterday.
3. Tet is a festival. Tet occurs in the first January.
 Tet is a festival which occurs in the first January.
4. This is a mobile phone .I bought it on 14 Le Duan St. v-ing phrase
Eg:
1. He ran faster than everyone. He didn’t have training shoes.
→He ran faster than everyone although he didn’t have training shoes.
→Although he didn’t have training shoes, he ran faster than everyone.
 • Khi mệnh đề trạng từ chỉ sự nhượng bộ đứng trước mệnh đề chính thì ta phải 
 thêm dấu phẩy ngay giữa hai mệnh đề.
2. The food we were offered at the party looked wonderful. It tasted awful.
→ Even though the food we were offered at the party looked wonderful , it tasted 
awful.
3. She is old. She still takes long walk every day.
→ Although she is old , she still takes long walk every day.
 • Khi muốn rút gọn mệnh đề trạng từ chỉ sự nhượng bộ ta dùng “ despite hoặc 
 in spite of”
4. Despite her old age , she still takes long walk every day.
5. In spite of the wonderful look of the food we were offered at the party , it tasted 
awful.
6. She is still bad at driving although she practices every day.
→ She is still bad at driving in spite of practicing every day.
NOTES:
7. It rained heavily but we still went on a picnic .
 It rained heavily , however, we still went on a picnic.
→ Although it rained heavily , we still went on a picnic.
→In spite of the heavy rain , we stil went on a picnic.
